Web Server Network Connectivity, Bandwidth, and Speed

Just about every day someone new gets into the website hosting business, offering web hosting services of all types at a greatly reduced price. You have no idea where the host computer is located, or if it is just someone's PC in a closet somewhere with very a limited bandwidth connection. They usually promise large amounts of hard space, as a selling point. Just try and get someone on the phone, or by email when you have a question. The truth is, most websites don't need very much storage space. Usually 10 to 15 Meg. will be more than enough space, although we offer much more than that. Technical support, server reliability, site security, and your connection speed to the Internet are the really important factors to consider here.

On this page we will attempt to show the speed difference between various connections from the server to the Internet itself. Most small ISPs, (service providers), use a single T1 (1.5Mb), or maybe multiple T1 (1.5Mb) lines for their servers. This usually includes their dial-up customers, their email, their news server, and their web hosting server. Medium size ISPs, also using their lines for multiple services, usually have T3 (45Mb) connections for their servers. Only the largest service providers can supply a OC3 (155Mb), or faster connection for their servers. If you are really serious about the way the world sees your Internet presence you should not even consider less than a T3 (45Mb), or an OC3 (155Mb) web server connection to the Internet. Our servers are connected to the Internet by redundant OC3s (155Mb each), OC12s (622Mb each), OC48 (2.4Gb), OC192 (10Gb), and OC256 (13.27). These OC3s, OC12s, OC48, OC192, and OC256s are used only for website hosting and that site's associated email, we don't provide dial-up or news at all. Our servers are located in Virginia, at the Verio Data Center, near the MAE-East main Internet node for the east coast. This gives us a much larger pipe to the Internet and the world.
